Wendy’s New Zealand and Restaurant & Café magazine are excited to announce the winner of the Wendy’s Build a Burger Challenge.
Everyone loves a great burger, and many of us have fantasised about what our perfect burger creation would be, that’s why Restaurant & Café teamed up with Wendy’s to give aspiring young chefs the chance to win burger glory for themselves and their school.
Wendy’s invited secondary school students to enter their burger recipes for the opportunity to have their creation added to the official Wendy’s menu for a limited time.
On top of being able to order their own burger from the Wendy’s menu, the winner also received $1500 worth of Burns & Ferrall culinary equipment for their school’s kitchen fit-out, kindly donated by the company that is the innovative heart of hospitality.
Expert burger judges searched up and down the country to find the best and brightest young burger builders and are pleased to announce that Jack Shortland of Pakuranga College took out the top spot.
One of Jack’s favourite pastimes is cooking with his great grandmother, Marilyn. So, when the Year 10 Pakuranga College student heard about the Wendy’s Burger Challenge, he knew exactly who to call.
Jack took his idea of an Italian themed burger to his great grandmother, and they spent hours experimenting and finding the perfect combination of his dream ingredients.
The timing of Jack’s win is perfect, as Pakuranga College is currently in the process of building a new classroom block that will include facilities for students with learning disabilities. Some of the $1500 worth of Burns & Ferrall vouchers will be used to help equip a new kitchen for this building, in which Pegasus Unit students learn cooking skills.
The remainder will go towards the College's senior Hospitality programme.
