Director admits to $400,000 of tax offences

A Christchurch director and shareholder of seven companies that ran bars and breweries has admitted to charges equal to $400,000 of unpaid tax. The charges, admitted by Thomas Alexander George Jones, were in relation to The Hibernian Hotel Limited, Swiggers Hoon Hay Limited, Matson’s BWS Limited, Matson’s Brewery NZ Limited, Swiggers South Brighton Limited, The Pier Limited, and NZH3 Limited. These companies ran several bars and breweries in the Christchurch area from 2010 to 2014. However, all of these companies are now in liquidation.

Jones has accepted full responsibility for the charges and said that the decisions made were solely his. The offences were mainly surrounding money deducted from wages, or employer contributions, that were being applied to other payments as opposed to payments to Inland Revenue.

This is not the first time Jones has had a run-in with the law, being previously convicted of other finance-related offences, totalling fines of $35,000. Jones will be sentenced August 2nd.
