As far as marriages go, sausage and beer have more than ticked off their diamond wedding anniversary.
Craft brewery Hallertau have been celebrating this perfect union with an annual competition named the Glorious Society of Bangers and Beer, kicking off this year on Mon 25th Sept.
The craft brewery will again challenge six Auckland sausage makers to make a new sausage with a different Hallertau beer. All six sausages are served on the Hallertau Brewery menu for a week and customers vote for their favourite snarler.
The butcher with the highest number of votes will take home a prize pack including a keg of beer - and the honour of their winning sausage on the Hallertau menu for one year.
The Tipsy Snarler is the reigning champion created by the Grey Lynn Butcher last year, and made with Freedom Pork, bacon, mustard and Hallertau Maximus IPA. Its popularity with locals has ensured a permanent place in the butcher’s display counter.
The butchers going head to head are:
- Westmere Butcher, Westmere
- Seaview Meats, Milford
- L’Authentique, Newton
- Mangawhai Meat Shop
- Kumeu Village Butchery, Kumeu
- Grey Lynn Butcher, Grey Lynn.
Each will create a new beef or pork sausage using one of the following randomly allocated hoppy ingredients from the Hallertau Nos. 1 – 6 range.
Hallertau chief brewer Steve Plowman says, “The Beer Banger Challenge brings together two wonderful mediums. This search will reveal new combinations of flavours and texture and one of these combinations will triumph over the others.
“We’re looking forward to discovering the perfect beer banger.”
Steve says the sausage platters were a hit with last year’s voters.
“We expect it will be another closely contested challenge between some of New Zealand’s most skilled independent butchers. More than 150kg of sausages were served last year and we’re anticipating even more this year. It’s going to be glorious sausage fest!”
