Auckland’s food scrap collection delay

The scheme initially designed to reduce the amount of food scraps going to landfill has been delayed until at least 2021. The delay comes from the inability of the organisers to develop the capacity and capability by 2020—the original release date.

Auckland Council hopes to get the region waste-free by 2040, and various other waste reduction schemes are being planned, or have started taking place. The new service is said to be able to divert around 50,000 tonnes of food scraps from the Auckland area; matter that will then get used as compost or fertiliser.
