A Clever Reusable Cup Cleaner Idea

To all the cafes accepting re-usable cups, this is for you! With the help of their friends at KeepCup, Kōkako Coffee installed a cup rinser right by the till at their brand new Commercial Bay site, just in case a customer’s reusable has been in the bottom of their bag and is looking a little worse for wear.

“We're staunch on our commitment to minimising waste and our industry's impact on the world so installing equipment that will, we hope, encourage the use of reusable cups was a logical step for us,” said Kōkako.

“We want to make reuse as easy as possible for everyone to participate in.”

It was at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo (MICE) in 2019 that the team at Kōkako first came across the KeepCup Reuser wash station - which was initially trialled at MICE in 2013.

MICE (Melbourne International Coffee Expo) is known throughout the Asia Pacific as the largest dedicated coffee event and sees over 30,000 disposable cups used over the four-day event. The KeepCup initiated 'Salute the Reuser' wash station provided a complimentary customer-facing rinse and wash service for all reusable cups. The initiative focused on counteracting this high volume of waste produced by the event.

“It was also an opportunity for KeepCup to engage with the public, encourage reuse and show off their product; they were able to personally celebrate those who have made reuse a habit,” explained Kōkako.

“We loved the idea and we came across it just in time to integrate a similar reusable cup wash station into our bar at Kōkako Commercial Bay.”

With health and safety at the forefront of everyone’s minds, this is a great idea for businesses who wish to maintain a high level of hygiene while still doing some good for the environment.

No more awkward, manky cup handovers to the baristas, simply rinse it and fill it.
