Following the launch of New Zealand's first-ever Michelin Guide, Kāpiti Coast-based chef Helen Turnbull was proud to be selected.
Paraparaumu Beach restaurant 50-50 has been selected by Michelin in the inaugural Michelin Guide New Zealand.
Owner and chef Helen Turnbull received the accolade at the guide's ceremony at the New Zealand International Convention Centre in Auckland, marking Michelin's first guide for New Zealand and its arrival in Oceania.
Founded in 2017, 50-50 reflects Turnbull's experience in some of the world's leading kitchens, including Michelin-starred restaurants. The restaurant's monthly-changing six- and nine-course tasting menus celebrate seasonal New Zealand ingredients and the producers, growers, and makers of the Kāpiti Coast and beyond.
Chef Turnbull said she was incredibly grateful to receive this recognition for the work of her team and for everything they have built together.
"This recognition belongs to the community that has supported 50-50 from the beginning: our regular guests, producers, growers, fishers, winemakers and everyone who has walked through our doors. I opened 50-50 on the Kāpiti Coast to find that community, and their support has made this possible,” said Chef Turnbull.
"I've always wanted 50-50 to feel distinctly of Aotearoa, a restaurant that speaks through our seasons, our ingredients and our people. To have that recognised on an international stage is deeply meaningful.”
She added that this accolade recognised the dedication of the whole team and the loyalty of 50-50’s guests.
“I also hope it shows our young chefs and front-of-house team that world-class hospitality can thrive here on the Kāpiti Coast."
Chef Turnbull founded 50-50 on the Kāpiti Coast with the goal of building a community around genuine hospitality and providing a menu that helps tell the story of New Zealand cuisine, which is a philosophy that’s made it one of the region’s most acclaimed restaurants.
