Late last year 42BELOW Vodka ran a Sustainable Cocktail Showcase competition to find Australia and New Zealand’s best sustainably- themed cocktails. The winners have been announced. Australia’s winners are Tioni Naslund (Flaggerdoot, VIC), and Honni Cox (Hades Hula House, SA). New Zealand’s winners are Juleon Green (Bedford Soda and Liquor), and Alex Vowles (Hawthorn Lounge).
Each of these lucky contestants has won an eco-trip of a lifetime to Bali. The winners will be meeting with recycling and trash-reduction industry experts and learning about ways in which sustainability can be promoted throughout Bali and beyond.
A vast amount of ideas were submitted, but ultimately, these lucky four take out the top spot. Honni’s cocktail, One-in-a-Melon revolutionised bubble tea by creating a much more sustainable way in which it can be produced. Tioni’s 42 Reasons looked at foraging local ingredients and utilising waste from his restaurant and bar. Juleon’s cocktail, Vitamin Bee, appealed to the plight of the honey bee, and Alex’s cocktail, Below the Bramble, had a root-to-flow-to-seed approach.
42BELOW is taking a stand against plastic wastage and celebrating how this can be incorporated into the cocktail industry. In an attempt to encourage less wastage, 42BELOW decided to celebrate the great work that bartenders can do while promoting sustainability.
