The Boat Cafe & Bar on Wellington's Oriental Bay has announced it will close its doors for the last time in March.
Often considered a true Wellington landmark, the capital’s famed Boat Cafe & Bar is to set sail for one last time. It will cease operations on the 15th of March 2026.
Built on a restored tug boat that arrived in New Zealand from Scotland in 1958, the Boat Cafe & Bar opened in 1992, having been bought by businessman Clem Griffiths in 1986 for the purpose of becoming a floating restaurant.
Since then, it has housed numerous functions, weddings, birthdays, and everything in between. It’s 35 years of service has mean that Wellington residents and visitors of all ages have fond memories of its whimsical concept, and it’s standing as a pillar in the Oriental Bay community.
The café itself operates from the main deck of the vessel and is fitted out to provide a main service bar area, full commercial kitchen and various dining areas, most of which have expansive sea views.
Boat Cafe & Bar’s owner said it was with a heavy heart that the announcement was made.
“The Boat Cafe has been a fun and quirky place to meet for decades and it will be sorely missed. With sublime views and a quirky nature, it’s hosted curious politicians, Hollywood celebrities and tens of thousands of Wellingtonians, who have celebrated brunches, lunches and special occasions on the cherished tug,” he said in a statement online.
“We are super grateful for every customer who walked through our doors, supported us, and became part of the voyage.”
The Cafe & Bar was for sale last year, listed on the market for NZD 220,000. In 2017, it was given coastal permission to stay in its current spot until 2032. Earlier this year, a campaign was launched to replace the space occupied by the vessel with an open-air saltwater pool.
“As we begin our final countdown, we’d love to see you again. Come by and grab some coffee or delicious food cooked in beef tallow before we’re gone.”
