The Pig & Whistle in Queenstown has started a new chapter, as the newly opened Walter's Tavern greets locals.

A beloved corner of Queenstown’s hospitality scene begins an exciting new chapter with the opening of Walter’s Tavern, formerly, well-known Pig & Whistle pub.

Proudly located on Ballarat Street in the heart of town, the newly revitalised venue retains the soul of the original while introducing thoughtful updates for its new era. While the name and look have evolved, Walter’s remains a warm and welcoming pub grounded in the Queenstown community.

“We’re so excited to introduce Walter’s to our community and Queenstown travellers,” said Venue Manager Clementine Rivier.

“This pub is all about creating a friendly, familiar place where everyone feels at home, whether it’s for a bite to eat with family, or somewhere to catch a live game of sport over the weekend.”

The revamped space blends heritage character with a fresh, modern feel across two levels. Original features like timber finishes, fireplaces, and pub charm remain, now layered with soft lighting, fresh textures, and refined touches that invite people to linger longer.

On the ground floor, a lively bar is anchored by fireplaces, large TV screens, and pool tables. Level one has been transformed into a relaxed mezzanine dining room, perfect for lunch with friends, family-friendly dinners or special occasions with casual banquette-style seating and soft lighting. The outdoor terrace is freshly landscaped and features comfortable mixed seating, a warming fireplace and is sheltered for year-round enjoyment, ideal after a day on the mountain.

Alongside the new-look, Walter’s menu brings together classic pub comfort food and fresh Kiwi flavours designed to suit any occasion. From after-work bites to hearty winter dinners, the offering is built for flavour and friendliness.

Standouts include Pork Belly Bites with chilli caramel and toasted sesame, South Island Smoked Venison BBQ Ribs with charred corn and ranch slaw, Fried Chicken with hot honey and pickles, and Braised Lamb Shanks. Lighter options such as Kingfish Sashimi Crudo also feature, while comforting classics like Beer-Battered Fish and Chips with fries, house salad and tartare are here to stay.

“The food is honest and hearty, with a modern skew,” said Rivier.

“We wanted to keep the classics we know people loved and add a few new favourites too.”

Walter’s opens with a full calendar of weekly entertainment and food specials.
