U.S | Subway Switches it Up

In the United States, Subway is de-emphasising its hallmark model of infinite customisation with the launch of twelve curated sandwiches that are now front and centre of the sandwich chain’s menu.

The chain has created new meat, cheese, veggie, sauce, and bread combinations to give customers options beyond build-your-own in an effort to improve throughput and guest satisfaction. The new Subway Series line of sandwiches is intended to streamline production by offering sandwiches with broad appeal that require minimal decision-making on part of the customers.

Subway and its franchisees are excited by the move, which it says is the biggest menu change in its more than 60-year history. Subway arguably created the infinitely customisable assembly-line model that now dominates fast-casual dining.

Last year, the chain carried out an ingredient upgrade as part of its “Eat Fresh Refresh” initiative to improve food quality. The new line of sandwiches benefit from this development, which included upgraded chipotle sauce and ranch dressing, and a new garlic sauce.

The Subway Series sandwiches have been in some restaurants for some months now and around half of customers order the new items as-is, without any changes, average checks are somewhat higher with the new format, and service time is faster. The new sandwiches have high guest satisfaction scores and reorder rates.

Subway has nearly 40,000 restaurants worldwide and more than 20,000 in the United States. To promote the new US menu, the chain is giving away up to one million 6-inch subs between 10am & 12pm July 12, to any guest who visits a participating US location.

  • The Boss - Meatballs in marinara sauce with pepperoni, BelGioioso Fresh Mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese toasted on Italian Herbs and Cheese bread

  • The Mexicali - Rotisserie-style chicken, smashed avocado, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onions and Baja Chipotle sauce toasted on Artisan Italian bread
  • The Great Garlic - Rotisserie-style chicken, bacon, provolone cheese, tomato, onions and new creamy garlic sauce toasted on Artisan Italian bread
  • The Champ - Rotisserie-style chicken, Monterey cheddar cheese, green peppers, red onions and peppercorn ranch toasted on Artisan Italian bread
