The Great NZ Toastie Takeover

The second year of the Great NZ Toastie Takeover is taking place this winter, with over 50 eateries competing for the coveted title of New Zealand’s best toasted sandwich. For all of those who lean towards a toasted sandwich for a tasty treat, it’ll be a busy winter trying to get to all of the participating eateries from around the country.

The judging of the toasted sandwiches will be split between six regions with two eateries from each area going through to the final. The judging began on the 22nd of June, and the finalists will be announced on the 1st of August. Participants will be judged by an array of sandwich connoisseurs, including head judge, Kerry Tyack, and his team of 19 other judges. The final decision, however, will be made by Joe McClure, from McClure’s Pickles in Detroit, who will fly over to New Zealand to bestow the title of Best New Zealand Toastie upon one lucky entrant. McClure said, “I love New Zealand and can’t think of a better opportunity to see more of it than by travelling around your beautiful countryside and eating the best toasties on offer. We’re so stoked Kiwis love our pickles, so it will be an honour to judge the 12 finalists.”

The criteria for this competition is rather simple, the toasted sandwich must be sandwiched between two slices of bread, it must be able to be consumed by hand if necessary, and the toasted sandwich must contain cheese and pickles from McClure’s range. The toasties will be judged based on presentation, the effectiveness of preparation technique, eatability, taste, innovation and originality.
