THE END OF AN ERA

The Lawrenson Group has announced the closure of another of its Hamilton locations, this time the student favourite Bar 101. However, unlike the closure of Victoria St Bistro, the closure of Bar 101 wasn’t due to lack of patronage. The site has been earmarked by the Council for a new development, which would result in the demolition of the building.

"It's been there for 10 years, it's pretty run down, it's definitely in need of a birthday and we said there's no point renovating it in its existing site if they're going to come and put a bulldozer through the building in 18 months' time," said owner John Lawrenson.

Late night options are becoming harder to find in Hamilton, with the iconic Hood Bar closing earlier this year due to licensing issues. However, Lawrenson insisted that his group were not planning on closing anything else, and may yet reopen Bar 101 in another location.
