Tasmanian Sparkling Wine Wins Big

Pirie Late Disgorged Sparkling 2011 has taken out Trophy honours in Class One – Sparkling Wine as well as Wine of Show at the 2023 Global Fine Wine Challenge.

Pirie is one of Tasmania’s original producers of premium sparkling wine, which was founded by viticulturist Andrew Pirie. Northern Tasmania is now widely recognised for the quality of sparkling wine produced in the true cool climate of 41-42 degrees south, and today Pirie produces some of the most acclaimed sparkling wines in the world.

The 2011 Late Disgorged hails from this cool-climate region and represents the highest quality of such wines, handcrafted in the traditional method from premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.

Ten years on lees have led to this moment of perfection, resulting in a rare and exquisite cuvée showcasing outstanding complexity and depth.

Pirie Senior Winemaker Tom Wallace said the team are so excited about Pirie Late Disgorged 2011 winning Best Sparkling and Wine of Show against some of the finest wines in the world.

Toni Paterson MW scored Pirie Late Disgorged Sparkling 2011 97 points and said the wine was Bright, fresh, and zippy.

"Fresh lemon. Cracked wheat. Gorgeous brioche flavours. I love the length and energy of this wine.”

The Global Fine Wine Challenge – the world's most exclusive wine show – is limited to New World nations. Participation is by invitation only, and each country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA) is restricted to submitting only their top 120 wines. The very best selections across 22 classes are made by country representatives regarded for their intimate knowledge of their nation's wines.
