Sonic Drive-in to test AI voice ordering

Sonic Drive-in restaurants have partnered with Zivelo, a Mastercard and self-serve kiosk company to test artificial intelligence in Sonic’s drive-through.

The beta testing, which will occur later this year, will feature AI-powered menus that use voice commands to take an order. On top of this, the AI technology will help to personalise the ordering experience for the customer through Sonic’s loyalty app. The technology will be able to recognise loyalty members as the pull into a parking space via geofencing in the app.

The voice assistant has many unique features, including being able to recommend something to customers based on the weather, time of day, seasonality and location, as well as being able to interact conversationally.

Healey Cypher, CEO of Zivelo, said, “Drive-through accounts for 70 percent of QSR transactions, yet the experience has remained more or less untouched by innovation. As customer expectation continues to move towards faster, personalised, and contextual experiences, we are excited to partner with Mastercard to bring this transformative solution to market and hopefully exceed those expectations.”
