The Fisheries Amendment Bill will assist in helping to modernise and update the industry, according to Seafood New Zealand.
Seafood New Zealand has welcomed the introduction of the Fisheries Amendment Bill as a practical update that will help keep New Zealand’s fisheries management system responsive, science-based and environmentally robust.
Chief Executive Lisa Futschek said New Zealand already has one of the most highly regarded fisheries management regimes, and the legislation that supports it must continue to evolve alongside modern science, technology, and changing conditions at sea.
“New Zealand’s fisheries are a public resource that must be managed carefully. We support changes that help ensure healthy fisheries, which all New Zealanders can enjoy,” Futschek said.
“On-board cameras are giving us better information than ever before, and the changes in the Bill help ensure our fisheries management system can respond to that data.”
Futschek added that the sector appreciated the work that had gone into developing the Bill and the engagement that had taken place with industry during the policy process.”
“We want to acknowledge Minister Jones for his leadership on this and officials for their constructive engagement.”
Seafood New Zealand recognised that there would be strong interest in these reforms. The Select Committee will be an opportunity for stakeholders to have their say; it is hoped, in a manner that is balanced and evidence-based.
