MEYER CHEESE TAKES HOME THE GOODS

Second-generation cheesemakers Meyer Gouda Cheese has secured the country’s top prize for cheesemaking, the Countdown Champion of Champions Award.

The winning cheese was the Meyer Smoked Goat Gouda, which was described by judges as “an absolutely gorgeous goat cheese, and a pleasure to eat,” adding that it had “a smooth creamy texture that delights the palate with sweet and mild piquant flavours.”

The result delighted the Meyer family, as the cheese has been on sale for less than 12 months.

“Quality has always come first,” said Miel Meyer, manager of Meyer Cheese. “I was always happy to be a part of our family cheesemaking ... success at the New Zealand Cheese Awards is a really good feeling for the whole Meyer family and makes all those long hard days more worthwhile.”

In addition to the Champion of Champions Award, Meyer Gouda Cheese also scored four gold medals and four championship prizes for their Goat Milk Gouda, Fenugreek, and two for their Smoked Goat Gouda in the New Cheese and Flavoured Cheese awards.
