For seasoned hospitality professional Claire Wilkinson, the sense of community has made the difference in her latest role.
The opening of The Springs Tavern in Onehunga has seen it become the latest neighbourhood pub. Venue Manager Claire Wilkinson said it was designed for mates, families and after-work catch-ups.
For Wilkinson, no two days are the same. She said The Springs Tavern has a great mix of everything, which is what she loves about working in hospitality. She said the best part is seeing regulars come back and new faces discover the bar.
Having started in the UK, Wilkinson moved to New Zealand a few years ago. She previously worked as the Assistant Venue Manager at Morningside Tavern before taking on her current role as Venue Manager at The Springs Tavern.
Wilkinson said it’s vital to ensure every team member feels equipped and supported with the right training in order to maintain service standards.
“Making sure they have access to resources and training opportunities to upskill is really important. Training is hands-on with menu knowledge, service practice, and regular refreshers to help us maintain that standard."
The Springs Tavern has used tools in its operations, like smart rostering and various other AI-based systems, to help increase efficiencies where possible. This has allowed the team to focus more of its time onto other areas like customer experience, and for management to focus on staff.
Wilkinson described The Springs Tavern as a true local, and a place that is welcoming, family-friendly and perfect for larger groups.
“The community response has been fantastic, and we're so happy to finally be open again and serving our locals.”
On the menu, Wilkinson said the Sunday Roast has been a firm favourite with customers, as well as the shareable dishes like the burrata and tacos.
“Lots of groups are choosing small plates to share. Spritzes and lighter cocktails are also in demand.”
Recently, Onehunga has been at the forefront of new openings and investment in the area. With the revamp the local Dressmart Shopping centre and Auckland FC choosing the nearby Go Media Stadium as its home base, The Springs Tavern is perfectly positioned as the next go-to bar and restaurant for locals.
“Hospitality creates a hub for the community and jobs for locals. With Onehunga growing and events at Go Media, it’s an exciting time to be here.”
