A smorgasbord of luxury high tea rail adventures has been announced by Great Journeys New Zealand for the winter season.
Great Journeys New Zealand has revealed three new luxurious winter rail journeys, each with a unique high tea experience designed to delight the senses while showcasing the South Island’s tranquil landscapes.
The new offerings have been described as an ideal option for those seeking an unforgettable journey.
The new ‘Scenic Indulgence’ rail journey has promised to be an entertaining and theatrical experience. Departing from Christchurch on 31 May 2025, the train will travel north to Scargill, where guests will be treated to high tea with a theatrical twist—The Court Theatre jesters will be on board to create an immersive atmosphere for those with a taste for the dramatic.
General Manager of Great Journeys New Zealand and avid commuter Tracey Goodall said there has been high demand for luxurious journeys with a touch of local flavour and flair.
“Themed rail experiences are becoming increasingly popular with customers who are looking for something unique to celebrate and enjoy,” said Goodall.
“We’re excited to collaborate with The Court Theatre for this new Scenic Indulgence train experience, following the success of our Tormore Murder Mystery train journeys.”
For a picturesque rail adventure, the ‘Toast to Timaru’ experience offers a trip from Christchurch to Timaru on 30 August 2025, where passengers will enjoy a three-tier high tea served in style as they meander through authentic rural landscapes. In Timaru, guests will have time to explore the town’s charming shops.
The third experience celebrates ‘Mid-Winter Christmas’ and will depart Christchurch on 26 July 2025. This festive rail journey to Timaru offers unseasonal cheer, with champagne and a Christmas-themed high tea served on board.
Goodall added that there was something for everyone with the new luxurious high tea offerings.
“Whether you're looking to treat yourself or someone special, seats are limited, so don't miss out on these opportunities to enjoy winter in style.”
