An opportunistic robber in Auckland who tried to rob a restaurant with a knife was beaten at his own game by an angry chef wielding two knives of his own. Vaughn and Helene Wilkinson were finishing up at their restaurant, Lena Urban Eatery, when the attack occurred.
The man walked in brandishing a knife and yelled at Helene to give him money. However, almost immediately Vaughn stormed out of the kitchen with two much bigger knives. The robber, quickly realising he was out-numbered and out-gunned, turned and ran.
It was probably a good move. Vaughn Wilkinson, before he became a chef, had made a career in the armed forces and spent eight years in the Navy.
“It could have gone very wrong,” he admitted. However, the pair weren’t flustered and went back to closing up for the night.
“We were like ‘oh well, move on.’”
