Kiwis reap the rewards for Shopping Small

American Express

American Express' annual Shop Small campaign returns for its fifth year, rewarding both shoppers and merchants.

As one of New Zealand’s most renowned personal chefs, Instagram-famous personal chef, Hercules Noble, is no stranger to big cities and high glamour. But more often than not, you’ll find Hercules on one of his local high streets, supporting small Kiwi businesses, as a vocal supporter of American Express Shop Small.

Now in its fifth year in New Zealand, Shop Small is a nationwide movement that celebrates the contribution small businesses make to the New Zealand economy and encourages consumers to support them, providing outstanding rewards to shoppers along the way.

For six weeks from 1 October to 10 November, eligible American Express Card Members who shop at participating Shop Small businesses and spend $10 or more, will get $5 back, up to five times.

A typical day of retail therapy for Hercules starts in his own neighbourhood of Parnell, where most mornings he calls into Young Dandy — a laid-back new cafe in the heart of Parnell serving specialty Ozone Coffee great food, and good vibes seven days a week.

“I love it because I can order a coffee, pay with my American Express Card and earn Membership Rewards points while doing so, sit back with my laptop and catch up with the awesome crew there, so ticks all round,” Noble said.

And of course, the thing every chef wants on their day off is someone else cooking for them, and most nights Hercules can be found in the heart of Parnell at Non Solo Pizza, an Auckland institution known for serving up some of the best authentic Italian cuisine this side of Milan.

Like Hercules, when you Shop Small, you're investing in your local community. Buying that brew from the neighbourhood café, getting a trim at the salon on the corner or indulging in a new outfit from the local boutique can all help support small businesses where you live and work.

Rob Bourne, Country Manager American Express New Zealand, said Shop Small aims to celebrate local business and the important contributions they make to their local communities.

“Small businesses have an important role to play in our local communities and our overall economy, thanks to their contribution to national GDP and the huge number of New Zealanders they employ,” Bourne said.

“American Express is proud to back small business in New Zealand and we want to encourage all Kiwis to get out and support them – whether that’s through buying a cup of coffee or a pair of shoes, every little bit counts.”

Shop Small ensures that these businesses, which employ local workers and support their local communities, can not only survive but thrive.

Small businesses are, after all, at the heart of where we live, eat, work and play.
