James Smith Joins IBA

AUSTRALIA | James Smith has been named as an incoming board member for the Independent Brewers Association during a pivotal moment.

The Independent Brewers Association has welcomed industry stalwart James Smith to the Board.

As the founder of The Crafty Pint, Smith is well known to the brewing industry, but this will be the first time he is directly a part of the IBA.

“James brings a wealth of experience to the table. Through The Crafty Pint he knows beer consumers, he has extensive knowledge of the history of the industry and deep relationships across the country,” a Evin Craney, Board Chair.

After a tough few years, the industry and association is at a pivotal stage, and more than ever it is focused on bringing everyone together to build a strong and sustainable future for independent brewers.

“We know that James shares that vision, and we are grateful that he has chosen to volunteer his valuable time and experience in the fight for the future of indie beer,” said Craney.

James Smith has joined the current seven directors who were elected by the membership.

“I’ve followed the evolution of the IBA with interest right from early discussions that led to the creation of its predecessor, the CBIA, and been part of many of the association’s events over the years too, so the opportunity to contribute further holds great appeal,” he said.

“While I don’t brew or sell beer, I’ve dedicated much of the past 16 years to covering, celebrating, analysing and, hopefully, helping guide the industry in Australia. So, at a time when every sector with which The Crafty Pint engages, brewing, hospitality, events, and retail, is facing significant challenges, it feels right that I should put my years of experience and knowledge to use as a director of an industry body with the best interests of the wider beer community at heart.”

James Smith has been appointed to one of the Board’s two vacant Appointed Director positions for a term until the 2026 Annual General Meeting.
