A Father's Day lunch was interrupted at a popular Hamilton restaurant, with police quick to respond.

Police are actively searching for perpetrators following an armed robbery at a Hamilton restaurant.

The incident occurred at Smith & McKenzie Steak House in the suburb of Chartwell, taking place on Father’s Day before noon. It is alleged that two people, one carrying a gun, allegedly stole cash before taking off in a vehicle.

A spokesperson said that diners and local witnesses had assisted police with their investigation, but were understandably shaken and upset in the aftermath of the event.

Restaurant staff at the Smith & McKenzie Steak House described the incident as a traumatic experience and expressed pride in their team’s response.

“There have been a lot of tears as we are absolutely gutted to have disrupted Father’s Day plans, a day we had poured so much time and effort into, hoping to spoil all the amazing dads out there. From the bottom of our hearts, we are so sorry,” the statement read.

The restaurant reopened the same night, and thanked the community for its kindness, understanding and support, for which it said meant more than ever to the restaurant’s team.

“It’s in moments like these that community matters most.”

Local members of the community were quick to share their support on the restaurant’s Facebook page. One wrote that it was a terrifying ordeal for all involved and they were glad that no one was hurt, while another said no business or person should have to deal with this.

“So sorry that this occurred, and you and your team are stars. No matter what, it was traumatising for all present, and to have reopened for dinner is a credit to you all. Knowing it was Father's Day and thinking of others to ensure they were able to still have a special celebration is gold,” one comment said.

Police located the vehicle used in the incident a short time after, and deployed the police Eagle helicopter to assist.
