DEVELOPMENT DOWN SOUTH

Invercargill’s CBD is in for major reconstruction, with full demolition and redevelopment to be started by Christmas. What will occupy the space will be a multimillion-dollar retail, food and entertainment complex, with Farmers confirmed as the anchor tenant.

The hope for the new development is it will bring a renewed sense of life to the CBD, perhaps even bringing people who have moved away from Invercargill back to the city. HWCP Management director, Scott O’Donnell, the man organising the development, hopes that the Farmers will be open in November of 2021. At this stage, the only other confirmed retailer was Starbucks, although a list of around 25 others were being talked to, as well.

O’Donnell expects the project to be completed by the end of 2022, but said that he was not making any promises. The total cost of the project is expected to be around $240 million.
