Calls for research into edible insects

Swedish scientists from the University of Agricultural Sciences are calling for more research into the sustainability of the growing edible insects’ industry. In an opinion article published by the Trends in Ecology and Evolution journal, scientists questioned the safety, environmental impacts and insect rearing challenges associated with the growing industry.

The researchers concluded that further investigation into food safety, work ethics, and mass rearing insects in countries where the species is not native needs to be conducted.

“Insects have the potential to be a good, sustainable, useful food source, but it’s not as simple as rearing them and then that’s it. There is a lot of effort that needs to be put into research,” said Asa Berggren, a conservation biologist at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
