Chefs from around the globe will be descending on Wellington in August for food festival Wellington On A Plate.
The festival was founded in 2009 by Sarah Meikle, head of marketing at Wellington's tourism agency, after being told to "fix August." Many restaurants closed or operated winter hours for the month as the chilly weather kept locals indoors, but WOAP has changed things. "For some Wellington restaurants and eateries now, August is busier than Christmas," says Meikle.
Previously a two-week affair, WOAP will run in 2019 for the entire month of August. This year's festival boasts a line-up of more than 20 international and New Zealand chefs including Ollie Clarke, Nancy Silverton and Laurent Loudeac.
From August 1st-16th, restaurants will showcase the region's food and featuring ingredients from local producers and suppliers. Then, from the 17th, they'll spend the next fortnight creating the festival's famous burgers.
