WAIMAUKU WINERY SOLD

Iconic Waimauku winery has been acquired by New Zealand business Sutton Group Holdings Ltd from Treasury Wine Estates. The site was the original home of well known brand Matua, that has been credited with taking the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc experience to the world.

A family-owned business founded by Brent and Denise Sutton, Sutton Group Holdings is operated alongside their daughters Rachelle and Rebecca, and Rachelle’s husband James Shortall.

The Sutton Group brings with it a wealth of experience in engineering, packaging, and food and beverage production spanning more than 30 years and is excited about taking over the pioneering winery.

As friends of the original owners, the Spence and Margan families, the deal is a sentimental one for the Sutton family who have had many great memories of the winery and its famous Hunting Lodge Restaurant.

Plans are to reinvigorate the winery into a destination for locals and visitors, where they can unwind from the bustle of everyday life, share special occasions and reconnect with the land.

Expansion of the site’s current production operations are also part of the grand plan as well as to explore future employment opportunities for existing Matua Auckland employees.
