TASTE OF THE ALPS

Tineke Sutton is the founder of Wanaka condiment company Taste of the Alps. She spoke to the team about her fresh range of locally made preserves.

What is your company background, how did you start the business?

“I am a chef of many years, who has travelled the world enjoying great food and wine. When it became time to settle in Wanaka, I worked in the wine & food industry and loved the Pinot Noir grapes. So when a family came along I branched out on my own and created Taste of the Alps.

We have a range of local preserves made from produce out our back door!”

What are the current product range and variants and how do these products stand out in the market?

“This is the Southern Alps range:

The Hunter, Cherry Relish,

The Cocky, Plum & Horseradish Relish,

The Farmer’s Wife, Lemon Curd,

The Fisherman, Bread & Butter Pickle,

The Vineyard, Pinot Noir Quince Jelly,

The Shepherd, Lemon & Rosemary Marmalade.

They are all created to be matched with their name and of course lots of cheese! The Vineyard, Pinot Noir quince jelly is created with early pickings of the Pinot Noir grapes and the quince is handpicked from beautiful Mt Barker. I believe there is one other Pinot Noir grape jelly out there, but it’s not made with quince. So yes! It is unique. On my label is the outstanding Mt Gold. It is a stunning range and unique to Wanaka. All my preserves are gluten free.”

Has there been any recent company news?

“My business was created two years ago and I am gaining a great following. Going forward at present we are building a house with a commercial kitchen.  The kitchen window looks out to Grandview Mountain!”

Where are your products currently available to buy, and are you looking at or wanting to expand your availability? If so, where would you like to see the product situated?

“My products are available:

Florence’s food store, Wanaka,

The Butcher’s smoke house, Wanaka,

Fedeli, Wanaka,

The Mediterranean market, Wanaka,

Wanaka Farmer’s Market,

Yumm, Christchurch,

Geraldine Orchard store.

I would love my products to be in more shops.  Farro Fresh is a great start and I would like more place like that.”
