Despite the culling of strawberry and caramel in the UK, McDonald’s New Zealand has assured customers that all three sundae flavours are safe. The two flavours disappeared off UK menus last month with little warning, prompting a flood of outrage on social media.

“Not impressed @McDonaldsUK have taken off the sundaes,” wrote one twitter user. “I don’t rate the McFlurrys. We were sundae eaters in my house. The toffee were my utter fav. No more ice cream at McDonald’s for me then.”

However, strict new government regulations also had a role to play.

“Hi, the Toffee Sundae and Strawberry Sundae were removed from the McDonald’s menu on Wednesday 26th September 2018, and they were removed because they weren’t very popular,” the company wrote in another exchange. “The Government recommendations regarding sugar also played a part in the removal.”

McDonald’s New Zealand spokesperson Simon Kenny confirmed that there were no plans to remove the caramel and strawberry sundae toppings from the menu.
