Starbucks makes staff cuts

Starbucks is getting rid of more than 350 corporate staff in an effort to make the chain more nimble in the face of declining sales.

“Every single decision was made after very careful consideration and reviewed with leaders across the company,” Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson wrote in a letter to employees. “And while incredibly difficult, they came as a result of work that has been eliminated, deprioritized or shifting ways of working within the company.”

The changes were announced in September but did not specify how many staff would lose their jobs. It is now expected that most of the job losses will come from the company’s base in Seattle.

“Starbucks is proud to call Seattle its hometown and remains committed to the Emerald City in this next phase of growth,” said a spokesperson from the company.

Starbucks reported same store sales growth of 4 percent earlier this month and revenue increased 10.6 percent from the same time last year. Investors are keeping a close eye on the chain.
