Misfit Brewing Co., a social enterprise dedicated to fixing New Zealand’s polluted waterways, has launched its first beers. Brewer Brendan Devoy started brewing which at university, where he was inspired to start an ethical brewery after reading about businesses like Toms Shoes.
Devoy, who has recently been contract brewing for Hallertau Breweries, will use Misfit’s profits to support charities like Million Metres, which plans to plant trees along streams and waterways to reduce runoff. He’s also looking at working with Oxfam to help with water quality in the Pacific.
The two beers were launched this month, each inspired by an artist who was renowned for challenging societal norms. The NZ IPA, named after Jean-Michel Basquiat, is a subtle homage to the complexities of street art with punchy tropical and citrus fruit notes, paired against a nice toasty character. The Andy Warhol Pilsner is a recreated version of the classic pilsner. The third beer, named after Keith Haring, is a white IPA and will be released in early 2019.
