Sentencing over sleeping pills in sundaes

A man has been sentenced to intensive supervision after spiking McDonald’s sundaes with sleeping pills. The man had bought the sundaes from the Te Atatu McDonald’s, taken them home, and laced them with prescription pills.

After initial reactions that McDonald’s products may be unsafe to eat, it became clear through the investigation that the accused had simply bought the food from McDonald’s—he was not affiliated with the restaurant. McDonald’s, along with their staff, have been cleared of any wrongful action. The man, who has no previous convictions, has been granted permanent name suppression.
