New Zealand’s food prices have increased, driven by rising lamb, beef, and chicken prices. From June to July of this year, food prices rose 1.1 percent, totalling a 0.9 percent increase from July of last year. Meat and poultry prices alone increased 2.8 percent on the month, while lamb, mutton and hogget prices rose 7.6 percent.
When compared to last year, meat and poultry prices are up 5.8 percent. Global demand for beef and lamb has been attributed to the shortage of pork given the spread of African swine fever.
Although vegetable prices are down 17 percent from a year ago, from June to July, they rose 3.7 percent.
