Restaurant opens in multi-million-dollar development

A new gastro restaurant and bar, part of a new multi-million-dollar retail development, is among the first business to open at The Point in West Auckland’s Te Atatu Peninsula this month. CEO of The Trusts Simon Wickham said the growth in demand for premium food and beverage hospitality offerings in the local area presents an opportunity for the design of a new style of facility.

“Mr Illingsworth is the product of more than two years of planning and development and will feature an entirely new culinary and beverage offering. Te Atatu Peninsula has seen a significant evolution in its demographic make-up in the past two decades but until now the retail mix hasn’t caught up.

The Point will see eight new retailers opening including a new state of the art, off-license liquor store, also run by The Trusts. The Point’s owner Helen Moore, who has had the site for more than 20 years, said interest in the centre has been strong and more than half of the site has been leased to a range of service operators.

“Our vision for this development has been to create a destination where the community can come together,” she explained. “Residents in the Te Atatu area are parochial and we wanted to provide somewhere that they could really feel part of. Interest from prospective retailers have been very positive which has given us a wider selection to decide which businesses provide a better fit for locals.”

The new restaurant and bar will provide employment for 18 locals as well as a further eight at their neighbouring liquor outlet. He said The Trusts operate as a social enterprise and have donated millions of dollars to local charities in the past year alone. The Te Atatu venue, Mr Illingsworth, was named after a local personality; who worked as a mailman and retailer in the early 1900s, and was a member of one of the areas founding families.
