The temporary closure of a South Dunedin Pizza Hut is not related to the food safety scandal which broke last week, according to Restaurant Brands. A sign posted on the door of the shop said that the store was closed for “urgent maintenance” but that it would reopen today.
Restaurant Brands marketing general manager Geraldine Oldham said that the closure was part of a “routine audit” and “not a result of MPI's investigation.” An audit had found that a piece of equipment needed replacing, Oldham said.
A spokesperson from MPI also confirmed that the closure was not related to the investigation, although the investigation “is continuing.”
Last week it was revealed that three staff had quit the restaurant to protest the actions of the franchise owner, who they allege served expired food, ignored dates of seafood and chicken and refused to fix equipment.
