A pop-up café has opened in the Hawke’s Bay Airport terminal, constructed entirely out of materials left over from the old terminal renovation. The Kete Kai café has become a popular attraction since first opening, thanks in no small part to the creative design from Arrow International architect Michael Zaragoza, who trained in New York before moving to Napier.
“People are intrigued to learn more about the design and how we've used materials and finishes from those already being used during construction,” said Hawke's Bay Airport commercial manager Dean Smith. “We are always looking for ways to reaffirm our commitment to sustainability so when Michael suggested recycling otherwise redundant materials left over from the construction site, we thought it was a fantastic idea.”
The design features elements of Hawke’s Bay’s horticultural heritage as well as Art Deco elements. The café is based in the arrivals hall and is open to all passengers and airport visitors.
