RECYCLABLES INVESTMENT

The government is prioritising the creation of New Zealand’s first 100 percent recycled plastic food packaging range with a $3 million investment. Through this investment, a new packaging plant in Auckland will allow for the creation of a new packaging range, that will cover the most common product lines, including meat and bakery trays, deli and produce. Furthermore, the new plant will allow recycled Type 1 or PET plastic to be decontaminated and turned back into food packaging.

Government funding comes through the Waste Minimisation Fund that is financed by the $10 per tonne levy on all waste sent to landfill. Following the disruption of New Zealand’s soft plastics recycling scheme, a taskforce had been dispatched to try and find a way to solve the problems. This investment and purpose-driven facility are a response to the call for environmental sustainability.
