The Auckland High Court has frozen the assets of a family group involved in the running of the Masala Indian restaurant chain, assets that include 33 residential and commercial properties expected to be worth around $7 million as well as other cash assets.
Justice Rebecca Edwards said those people connected to the restaurant chain had benefitted from “significant criminal activity” Last year, family members were sentenced on immigration and worker exploitation charges with some former employees working up to 11 hours a day for as little as $2-64 an hour.
Those convicted at the time were Ms Joti Jain (42) who received 11 months home detention and Rajwinder Grewal who received four and a half months home detention. The court documents showed that two other relatives, Supinder Singh and Rupinder Chahil, were other key people involved in the restaurant operations.
