Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is being embraced in New York City, with a Kiwi café owner offering a 50 percent discount to customers willing to order their coffee using Te Reo Māori.
Craig Nevill-Manning runs the Happy Bones Café in Manhattan, and was inspired by seeing the response from cafés in New Zealand.
"I think it's a great idea, because the Māori language is often something we reserve for special occasions - at least in my circles," he said. "This way it brings it into something we can enjoy every day."
The move was well-received by customers, especially by the local New Zealand community.
"I think it's a really cool idea, and it works out well because a few of us from New Zealand are doing Māori lessons here, so it timed out well that we could put it to use," said one New Zealander who had moved to New York five years ago.
Happy Bones wasn’t the only North American venue to get involved, with Pilot Coffee in Toronto also embracing Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori.
