Patrick Lam, from Tauranga, has been crowned King of Pies for a record seventh time. At the 2019 NZ Pie Awards, Lam picked up the 2019 Supreme Award or his mince and cheese pie. One of Lam’s bakeries, Gold Star in Tauranga, has entered the competition each year, something that Lam believes helps them to stay relevant in the industry.

Since the beginning of the competition in 1996, Lam said that the competition is getting increasingly fierce. In addition to the Supreme Award for his mince and cheese, Lam also picked up a gold in the Bacon and Egg category, and two bronze awards, one for his Vegetarian pie, and one for his Chicken and Vegetable. Across Lam’s three bakeries, he said that he could expect to sell around 500 of his mince and cheese pies each day.
