INTRODUCING THE P.L.T.

McDonald’s has launched a Beyond Meat plant-based burger to trial in Canada. For twelve weeks, the burger dubbed the ‘PLT’, or Plant, Lettuce and Tomato, will be available at 28 restaurants in Southwestern Ontario. Although McDonald’s has tested plant-based options in various locations around the world, this will be the first time it has brought a plant-based meat option out with a top distributor.

“This test allows us to learn more about real-world implications of serving the PLT, including customer demand and impact on restaurant operations,” said Ann Wahlgren, McDonald’s vice president of global menu strategy.

Although the Canadian market provides a relatively similar testing space to what could be expected in the USA, McDonald’s are cautious. Rolling out the plant-based burgers permanently would require an operation change, including dedicated grill space. McDonald’s partnership with Beyond Meat has already proved beneficial for the meat-alternative manufacturer, stocks have already risen 11 percent.
