DOWN WITH HIS SHIP

The iconic Dunedin pub, the Captain Cook pub, is shutting down again, this way making way for a pizza outlet. From next month, the Captain Cook pub, located on the ground floor of the Captain Cook Hotel, will become a Sal’s Pizza.

Mike McLeod, Captain Cook Hotel operator, said that he had decided to close following the offering from Sal’s. Although the pub is closing, McLeod noted that the live music venue upstairs would continue to operate under the Captain Cook name.

Following more than 150 years of operation, the pub has seen numerous local student and staff members alike through its doors. It closed in 2013 but reopened in 2018 as a gastropub.
