A world without avocado is a world that many would care to survive in. Thanks to scientists at the National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity in Mexico, Texas Tech University, and the University of Buffalo, perhaps this is a world that we’ll never have to endure.
These scientists have cracked the Hass avocado’s genetic code. What this means is that they can now work on a way to improve avocado farming to avoid shortages, as well as boosting avocados’ resistance to disease.
Through the sequencing, scientists were also able to determine that the Hass variety gets 61 percent of its DNA from Mexican avocados and 39 percent of it from Guatemalan ones.
Through this opens the opportunity to create new avocado varieties that are more resistant to climate change, amongst other ‘improvements’.
