CHINESE RESTAURANT CHAIN LOSES $190M

A pregnant customer at popular Chinese restaurant chain, Xiabu Xiabu discovered a dead rat in her hot pot dinner, mid-way through her meal. Images of the dead rat in the soup have circulated the internet, and the incident has seen the chain’s stock prices plummet, causing a loss in market value of around $190 million.

Amid concerns over the health of the woman and her unborn child, the firm offered to provide the couple with around $4,500 to abort the baby or $1,000 compensation for the incident- an amount the woman’s husband has refused until a full medical examination has been completed.

Initially, the restaurant firm issued a statement stating it had ruled out the possibility this incident was due to lack of hygiene in the business but has since retracted this. Chinese netizens have been sharing the post and commenting about the case with negative remarks aimed at the restaurant for how they are handling the situation. No stranger to food-safety scares, this incident comes just days after a woman at a different chain of restaurants discovered maggots in her soup.
