BURGER BURGER EXPANDS SOUTH

Burger Burger is setting up shop in Christchurch, the first time the cult burger chain has expanded beyond Auckland. However, it will mean that Supreme Supreme café, with which Burger Burger will share a space, will close its doors while renovations are going on, resulting in staff redundancies. The new establishment is expected to open in February 2019.

Coffee Supreme chief executive Al Keating said that the staff redundancies were an unfortunate side effect of the expansion. "It's a shame really that we've had to close while the works are taking place, but we've made some significant changes in order to cope and are really excited about what the outcome will be," he said. “We've had good relationships with other hospitality people here, as a coffee supplier and as a neighbour, and we know it's a challenge out there at the moment. Lots of buildings are being built with cafes on the ground floor where the buildings are not fully occupied.”

The new development will see a new entrance built off a laneway behind the building. The café will downsize from 70 seats to around 30, while Burger Burger will occupy the main dining space as well as a pavilion which will be built over what is currently a car park.
