The winner of New Zealand’s best pie has been announced, and it’s a familiar face.
Patrick Lam of Patrick’s Pies in Bethlehem, Tauranga, won his sixth Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Award title, making him the most decorated piemaker in the 22-year history of the competition. He first won it in 2003 with a mince and cheese entry, before taking home the title in 2004 and 2009 with a creamy bacon, mushroom and cheese pie and then again in 2010 and 2016 with a bacon and egg pie.
The 2018 title was won with a roast pork and creamy mushroom pie. "I feel so excited and happy because the roast pork mushroom had a silver last year and this year we have a gold and win a supreme award," Lam said.
